Quakecon 30th Anniversary

Quakecon 30th Anniversary
Rusty Yow · July 27, 2026 · Updated August 11, 2026

This time next week Quakecon 2026 will be happening at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center. For me this will make 21 years of going to Quakecon (if you count the COVID @ home years) and I always plan to go. The convention is located in DFW Texas which is close to home for me and almost always been in the summer month of August.

2026 Features

The Foudners

Since Microsoft took over Quakecon it seems that the convention is based around the roots of it all, a LAN party. There has been less big events in the recent past and definitely less give aways for sure. I’m not complaining as this is my one time a year I can be my self around friends and like wise people.

It is exciting that 4 founders of ID software / Doom will be here this year. John Romero, John Carmack, Tom Hall and Adrian Carmack will all be there, for some the first time in years. I’m very excited to listen to my personal mentors talk about the good ol days.

There is rumor of a remake of the 2009 Wolfenstein game will drop next month. Maybe announced during Quakecon? Maybe we can get some news of the next Skyrim, although I doubt it.

Annoyances For 2026

I think this year some Quakecon goers are upset about the special event registration. It is the 30th anniversary so they have 3 free events but still requires a ticket which you can assume sold out quick. I mostly wanted to see the ID software panel which I was able to get tickets for. However the celebration night which will host the Master Pancake was sold out so fast I never had a chance. So I am bummed about that and for the first year I wont be able to see Master Pancake because it’s gatekept.

The BOYC tickets them self was not fun for some. Recently Quakecon has been offering group tickets, which is great if you have a group of friends. Next year I have learned to group up with the friends I do hang out with instead of trying to go solo. I almost did not get a seat at all this year!

Hope For The Future

Another topic for this year might be the Microsoft / Xbox lay offs. I know it impacted ID software and Bethesda studios. I do hope this wont mean the end for Quakecon next year. After all Quakecon was just a fan club back in the early days to celebrate the games people enjoy, how could they take that away! The game studios have stayed positive in their work but I still worry for the future games.

Quakecon 2026 Follow Up

This year was a great time! It felt special being the 30th anniversary of Quakecon and being able to see ID software founders talk about their experiences over the years. Below is a gallery of photos taken this year.
